April 5, 2007 - Jan. 7, 2012 SOUTH BEND - Elijah James Shelton, 4, of South Bend, passed away peacefully at 4:25 p.m. in his mother's arms on Saturday, January 7, 2012, in Riley's Children's Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born April 5, 2007, in Rochester, MN, to Latoya Smith and William Shelton. Elijah was always smiling and bringing joy into the lives of others. His strength throughout his struggles touched all those around him. Elijah's spirit will always be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. He attended Lafayette Elementary School in South Bend. Survivors include his mother, Latoya Smith of South Bend; stepfather, Justin Batalis of South Bend; grandparents, Karl (Nikki) Smith Sr. of Michigan City, Michele (Suzanne Halligan) Sanders of South Bend; great-grandparents, Donna Sanders and Judy Studer, both of Michigan City; one aunt, Maria (Jimmy) Goodloe of Michigan City; three uncles, Karl (Sharon Clemons) Smith Jr., Kody Smith and George Smith, all of Michigan City; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Thelma and James Smith Sr., David Sanders, Garnet and Jeff Halligan; and by two cousins, Sebastian and Margret Agers. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Road, LaPorte, (219) 362-3100, with Rev. Tammy Brown officiating. A visitation and viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. today and 10:00 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the funeral home. January 11, 2012 Elijah you will be missed by me and Mae MAe. I remember the first time your mommy came into the gas station and I met you and you had a sucker and I told your mommy dont worry about it that you could have it. Baby you will always be special in our hearts.
